Benefits of Pressure Washer Sandblasters

Best Pressure Washer Sandblasting KitsPressure washer sandblasters provide the following benefits –they can remove layers of dirt, feature powerful performance at an affordable price, create no dust when operating, easily clean nooks and crannies, and are suitable for use on heat-sensitive surfaces.

1. Remove Caked-on Layers

Pressure washer sandblasting kits easily remove rust, paint, grease, stains, and layers of dirt. Pressure washer sandblasting kits are efficient with chewing gum removal from concrete surfaces.

2. Affordable But Powerful

Pressure washer sandblasting kits are more affordable than air compressors and can be used with most pressure washers.

3. No Dust

Unlike traditional, dry sandblasters, water-based pressure washer sandblasting kits don’t generate as much dust. Pressure washer sandblasting kits don’t require wearing a mask while operating and are safe and eco-friendly.

4. Easily Tackle Nooks and Crannies

Pressure washer sandblasting kits can get into cervices, nooks, and crannies that can be challenging to sand when using sandpaper.

5. The Surface Stays Cool

Pressure washer sandblasting kits are safe for surfaces sensitive to heat, such as thin metal and plastic that can warp, bend, or change color when exposed to heat. The cool water keeps the pressure washer sandblasting kits’ temperature under control. Alternatively, pressure washer surface cleaners with adjustable temperature settings can be used on heat-sensitive surfaces.

What Is Sandblasting?

Pressure Washer Sandblasting Kit Reviews

Sandblasting is a technique of smoothing and cleaning surfaces using abrasive materials, such as sand. Sanding an item strips its paint or any other layer that is underneath off. Sandblasting is mostly used for stripping off paint and rust off vehicles such as cars, motorcycles, boats, and airplanes. Sandblasting is an alternative to sanding with sandpaper or using chemical paint strippers.

Sandblasting involves using a dedicated machine – an air compressor or pressure washer, a sandblasting kit, and a bag of sanding material. Most sandblasting kits use silica sand, purified river sand, builder’s sand, pool filter sand, baking soda, or crushed walnut shells. Using sandblasting kits with pressure washers that blast pressurized water and sand onto the surface results in efficient and dust-free cleaning.

Dry vs Wet Sandblasting

When choosing between dry and wet sandblasting, factors such as the surface that needs to be cleaned, the area where the cleaning is going to be conducted, and affordability should be considered.

1. Material

Dry sandblasting is suitable for working on wooden surfaces because wood doesn’t handle moisture well and bends or gets blisters when exposed to excess water.

Wet sandblasting is suitable for working with plastic that bends and warps when exposed to heat while the water coming from the pressure washer prevents surface overheating.

Both dry and wet sandblasting can be applied to metal or masonry. If the metal surface is prone to corrosion, it should be previously treated with an anti-rusting product.

2. Dust

Wet sandblasting is recommended when working in populated areas, such as near schools, office buildings, or living space because it minimizes the amount of dust. Water droplets keep the shattered sand particles down, which is why wet sandblasting is a more eco-friendly and safer method and it doesn’t require wearing a mask.

Sandblasting using an air compressor or dry sandblasting requires wearing safety equipment – a respiratory mask and eye protection due to the large number of dust particles flying around.

3. Affordability

Air compressors are more expensive than water-based tools, except for the best commercial pressure washers. Regular pressure washers with a PSI of around 1,500 are affordable units that don’t use large amounts of water and can be used for wet sandblasting.

Pressure Washer Sandblasting Kit Buying Guide

Pressure Washer Sandblasting Kit Buying GuideThe most important factors to consider when buying a pressure washer sandblasting kit include PSI and GPM ratings, nozzle tip material, and sand intake.

1. PSI and GPM ratings

PSI stands for pounds per square inch, and this measurement defines how much pressure a pressure washer can create. Standard pressure washers’ PSI ranges between 800 and 10,000, portable pressure washers can deliver between 800 and 2,000 PSI, and gas-powered pressure washers can deliver around 8,000 PSI. GPM tells how much water a pressure washer pours out and stands for gallons per minute. When combined, GPM and PSI give the actual power of a power washer.

When attaching a pressure washer sandblasting kit to a pressure washer, the PSI and GPM of both units should be considered. Low-rating pressure washer sandblasting kits work best under 2,600 PSI, while heavy-duty sandblasting kits operate best when used with pressure washers rated at or above 3,500 PSI. If a pressure washer sandblasting kit is exposed to excess pressure, it will not be able to withstand it and the nozzle, where water and sand combine, or the water wand may break.

2. Nozzle Tip Material

Pressure washer sandblasting kits’ nozzle tips have to be strong and durable to endure the pressure and abrasive power of the sand. Nozzle tips can be made of carbide, ceramic, and steel.

2.1. Carbide

Carbide, the collective name for compounds of carbon and metal, is the toughest material used for many industrial tools and equipment. Carbide nozzle tips for sandblasting kits are expensive for being highly resistant to wear, tear, and corrosion.

2.2. Ceramic

Ceramic nozzle tips made of natural materials are the most commonly used for sandblasting because they have the best price to durability ratio. Ceramic nozzle tips are resistant to sand abrasion but less resistant than carbide nozzle tips.

2.3. Steel

Steel nozzle tips can wear off quickly and corrode when exposed to pressurized water and sand slurry.

3. Sand Intake

The sand intake of a pressure washer sandblasting kit is composed of two parts: the hose and the wand.

3.1. Hose

The hose transports sand from the sandbag to the nozzle tip, where it is mixed with water and sprayed. The hose doesn’t suffer a lot of abrasive damage, and it is usually one of the longer-lasting parts of any pressure washer sandblasting kit. Most sandblasting sand hoses are mostly made out of plastic or rubber, while some are made out of metal.

When using pressure washers sandblasting kits with electric pressure washers that don’t deliver high PSI, hoses of 20 feet or longer should be used.

3.2. Wand

The wand of the sand intake construction is located on one end of the hose and it should be put inside the container with sand. The wand sucks in the sand and brings it into the hose. The best wands are made of stainless steel or tough plastic.

How to Set Up Your Sandblasting Kit

How to Set Up Your Sandblasting Kit

1. What You Need

  • A bag of abrasive media – silica sand, crushed walnut shells or corn cobs, baking soda, or similar
  • A pressure washer – ideally over 2000 PSI
  • A sandblasting kit
  • A large tarp or similar water-resistant material to collect sand
  • Protective equipment – protective eyeglasses and clothes, a respiratory mask

2. Setting Up

Setting up a pressure washer sandblasting kit should be done near the water drain or on a grass field. The pressure washer sandblasting kit should be assembled and protective equipment can be worn during cleaning.

2.1. The surface

When working with an electric pressure washer, a water drain and electrical outlet should be nearby while for gas pressure washers only a water supply will be needed. A tarp can be spread around the surface that needs to be cleaned to collect the sand and reuse it afterward once it is dry.

2.2. Assembling the kit

The metal wands of pressure washer sandblasting kits should be connected to the pressure washer wand. The plastic or metal tubes at the end of the pressure washer sandblasting kits should be connected to a media used for sandblasting. Sand should be poured in a bucket, placed at an accessible place, and kept dry.

The sand wand should be immersed into the bucket with sand so it reaches the bottom of the bucket while the tip of the wand should be left outside of the bucket so it gets enough air. The pressure washer wand should be positioned under the sand wand to prevent water from getting into and potentially jamming the sand hose.

3. Safety during Handling

Safety During Handling3.1. How to start blasting

  • The pressure washer’s wand should be pointed down when just starting the pressure washer.
  • The pressure washer should be a couple of feet away from the surface before the blasting starts.

3.2. Protective equipment

A list of protective equipment that should be worn to stay safe while working with pressure washer sandblasting kits is listed below.

  • Goggles or protective face masks should be worn to protect the eyes.
  • A breathing mask should be worn to prevent breathing in sand dust and to protect the lungs.
  • Waterproof clothing such as boots and work suits should be worn when working with pressure washer sandblasting kits to protect the skin.
  • Hearing protection such as earplugs and earmuffs should be worn to alleviate the loud sound produced by pressure washers and to prevent excessive hearing loss.

FAQ About Sandblasting Kits

1. Are pressure washer sandblasting kits safe to use?

Yes, pressure washer sandblasting kits are safe to use, for as long as safety guidelines are followed and protective equipment, including goggles, face mask, breathing mask, and earplugs, is worn.

2. What kind of sand should I use for sandblasting?

Finer media such as baking soda and crushed walnut shells should be used for sandblasting delicate surfaces. Coarse media such as crushed glass and swimming pool filter sand should be used with powerful pressure washers for sandblasting tougher surfaces.

3. How much pressure do you need to sandblast?

Anything above 1,500 PSI is enough pressure to sandblast. Sandblasting should be started at lower pressure settings, then the pressure should be adjusted during cleaning. Factors such as the severity of the rust, paint, or dirt that needs to be removed, and the type of media used determine the amount of pressure needed to sandblast.

4. What do I do if water gets into the sand supply hose?

If water gets into the sand supply hose, the pressure washers should be turned off and the sandblasting kit should be disassembled. The sand wand should be removed from the sand so the sand doesn’t get wet. The hose should be removed from the pressure washer and sandblaster and dried before being used again.

5. Can a pressure washer be turned into a sandblaster?

Yes, a pressure washer can be turned into a sandblaster. Once the pressure washer is attached to a pressure washer sandblasting kit it should be immersed into a bucket filled with an abrasive medium – sand. The trigger of the pressure washer should be pulled, which makes the water follow through the lance and draws up sand and mixes it with the water.

    • Hey Jim!

It depends on what you need to do. With 1700 PSI, you won’t be able to remove paint off your car efficiently, but you can get rid of light rust or caked-on layers of dirt. It might take a bit longer with 1700 PSI, but you can definitely use a sandblasting kit. The good news is – you don’t need to spend a lot of money, since even a lower-rated one will do just fine! And also, please check the “how to” part of the article. Hope that helps!
